3 Iranian films among 100 best movies of the 2010s

The film industry and website review IndieWire has published a list of 100 movies which defined the 2010s, including three Iranian titles.

The website introduced the films and highlighted actors who made them possible.

The three Iranian choices of the website are ‘A Separation’ by Asghar Farhadi, ‘Certified Copy’ by Abbas Kiarostami and ‘This Is Not a Film’ by Mojtaba Mirtahmasb.

‘A Separation’ (2011) won Farhadi the Golden Bear, the Golden Globe, and the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language film.

Simin (Leila Hatami) and Nader (Peyman Maadi) in ‘A Separation’ are engaged in a custody battle. The film is a true realization of the pain of breaking a relationship.

The couple has to choose whether to move abroad to give their daughter a good education or to stay home to care for the husband’s ailing father.

‘Certified Copy’ (2010), Kiarostami’s first movie shot outside of Iran, begins in an Italian village.

The piece narrates the story of a nameless woman (Juliette Binoche) who encounters a writer (William Shimmel) who likes to question the order of things.

Once a local restaurant owner mistakes the two for a long-married couple and they start thinking about this idea and face a lot of questions.

‘This Is Not a Film’ (2011) was a sign that showed the definition of film itself is changing. It also depicted the power of cinema and its final purpose.
